Book Talk: ‘The Novice’ by Taran Matharu

*Warning – overuse of the words cool and coolest.*

Hey guys. Hope you’re all good.

It’s been a few weeks since I found out about Taran Matharu. The first literary agent I submitted my query too is the agent that represents Taran and it was while doing some research on her that I came across him. And I’m glad I did.

To start off, I can tell you that by talking to him on Twitter, reading a couple of interviews and seeing a couple of videos that he has done, Taran is a cool guy. (FYI, the piece he wrote about how racial bullying turned him to writing about fantasy races is pretty moving and you can find a link to it by trawling through his Twitter. Oh and he’s a cool tweeter too. Look him up at @TaranMatharu1).

So Taran is an author and his journey to publication is inspiring. The highlights include the book he wrote for NanoWriMo, ‘The Novice’ reaching over a million reads on Wattpad, him getting signed by Juliet Mushens of the Agency Group, his book getting published and a pretty cool launch party (if the photos on Twiter are anything to go by). Again, look Taran up to find out about his experience on Wattpad, his journey to publication and the aftermath.

I don’t want to spoil ‘The Novice’- book 1 of ‘The Summoner’ trilogy- but I have checked it out and it’s a really cool book. It’s different and unique and if you know Pokémon (and I’m glad I know the original show), it may remind you a little of Pokémon. Which makes it even cooler.

‘The Novice’ tells the story of Fletcher, the protagonist but also features elves and dwarves and an academy and lessons and cool teachers. There are also ‘bad’ pupils and good friends and a cast of characters, as well as a world, that readers can invest themselves in. There’s racial bullying too, and social class differences and, as with any good book, a story that makes you think. And feel.

The coolest thing however, are the demons which can be summoned from the ether. Fletcher’s demon, a salamander called Ignatius is, in my opinion, the best. And I want one.

As a character, Fletcher’s great but if I had to pick a non-demon character to be my favourite, it would probably be Othello, the dwarf. He’s brave and wise and knows how to fight. Plus he has a Golem demon. Awesome right? It’s awesome. (FYI again, racial differences that have the dwarves be looked down upon are prevalent in the novel and important to the story.)

I’m looking forward to the other two books in ‘The Summoner’ trilogy. When I asked Taran how book 2, he said he was almost done writing it. I’m looking forward to reading that. And book 3.

I’m really impressed with this story because it’s well written with engaging characters and a unique plot. I don’t have a complaint about it so I’m gonna go ahead and give it a 10/10 rating.

In conclusion, I definitely recommend this book. Read it if you would and then send Taran a tweet to let him know what you thought. Authors love the love!

Until next time guys,

Zuhaib.
