Update #10 – Something New

Hey guys,

So recently, something happened.

I was in my parent’s living room some time ago, playing a video game when my mum said something along the lines of ‘instead of playing video games, why don’t you learn about making one?’

I didn’t pay attention the first few times she said this cos, well what a huge undertaking that would be and I didn’t think I could do it anyway.

My mum said the same thing not too long ago. And this time… I listened.

I don’t know exactly why- perhaps I thought that it was, at the very least, worth looking into- but recently I decided to start studying the video game making process.

Now I’ve been a gamer since I was like 9 and now I’m in my late twenties. So I know a bit about what makes a decent game.

So basically now I’m on the road to trying to become an indie gamer.

I’m learning the basics with the goal of wanting to make a game of my own. My plan is to make a zombie game. If I could make something in the vein of my favourite game, The Last Of Us, that would be awesome but that had a whole team at Naughty Dog working on it. I’m just one dude.

Still, indie zombie games have been done and I’m working on my own.

I’ve been putting together a story (this is where my ability to write comes handy) and am learning the relevant software.

You can check out a small game I made called ‘Rags To Riches’ on a site where anyone can make games here.

I’ve got my novel out with literary agents right now so fingers crossed on that count. But this is something different. Something new.

It may not work out but I’m getting to lean something that I didn’t know before.

And it’s definitely overwhelming but at the same time, it’s exciting.

Wish me luck.

Until next time,

Zuhaib

Terralee Hart – Elementia (Wattpad Story)

Hey guys,

First off, loving the likes Zombies Versus Teens has been getting, plus there was a comment that made my day. So props to those of you who have checked it out.

So I thought I’d upload some, if not all, of my main story. I’ve decided to bite the bullet and put my main book on Wattpad. At least for now. Maybe I’ll chicken out and take it down. I dunno.

I do know of an author who went viral on Wattpad and then got published. So you never know. If I get plenty of support, I might get some success of my own and this could be an alternative to the agent querying.

And maybe a publisher or an agent will see it. Ya… never… know.

Check out the first chapter @ https://www.wattpad.com/story/88250961-elementia-book-1-of-the-terralee-hart-series and let me know what y’all thought. I’d love to get feedback.

Enough support and maybe I’ll upload more.

If you like Harry Potter and/or Avatar The Last Airbender, this may be the story for you.

Oh and if you do like it, maybe you can pass the word on.To your family, your pets mates, your mates mates and so forth.

Though I doubt you telling your pets is gonna do me much good. 😀

Until next time guys,

Zuhaib

Agent Deets #1

Hey guys,

If you’ve been following along with this blog or have checked out the other posts, you’ll know that I’m a writer who’s been querying agents.

So I had an idea recently.

Since this is a writer’s blog, I know that some writers might be checking it out. Maybe some writers who are on the same road as me i.e. searching for a literary agent.

It’s a hectic process, trying to find an agent.

I thought it’d be cool to share some agent info that I’d found with my fellow writers, in case you’re looking. Agent Deets is where I’m going to post that info as I come across different agents.

Today I’m going to post details about 2 agents.

First up, Juliet Mushens.

One of the founding agents of the agency, Caskie Mushens, Juliet is an agent that I contacted with high hopes. It wasn’t to be though. However, she’s the only on who gave me proper feedback, which I appreciated. I followed her on Twitter for a bit and really liked her. I might contact her again cos my book’s come on leaps and bounds since I contacted her.

You can follow her on Twitter @Mushenska and visit her agency’s website, at http://www.caskiemushens.com, to discover their submission guidelines and the types of genres they represent.

Up next, Sarah Manning.

Sarah, of The Bent Agency,  seems cool and the thing that I like about her agency is that you don’t have to send them a synopsis as such nor the first 3 chapters, just the first 10 pages, a bit about you and a bit about your book.

You can follow her on Twitter @SarahManning123 and visit her agency’s website, http://www.thebentagency.com, to discover their submission guidelines and the types of genres they represent.

So that’s a start and hope it helps someone.

Until next time,

Zuhaib

PenScratch Wants You!

Are you a writer, either struggling or published, or a novel or movie reviewer? Even if you’re not, do you reckon you could be?

So I was talking to a friend of mine recently about reviewing and as the conversation went on, we spoke about crime novel reviews because I’d asked him if he knew who I could review for.

Well he suggested a site that primarily writes crime reviews and I replied by telling him that I’d never read a crime book and did he know if they did fantasy.

His response was why didn’t I set up the fantasy equivalent of that site. I asked him if he thought I could and he said ‘definitely’ and that I could get some writers on board too.

That’s where you guys could come in.

I want this blog to be about more than just what I myself write. Having been the editor of a school magazine that I created myself (more years than I care to remember despite only being 28), I know what it is like working on a team and I think it could be cool doing so.

So basically if y’all are published or, like yours truly, are a struggling writer eagerly awaiting that ‘yes I love your book, gimme, gimme, gimme’ from an agent or publisher, maybe you have stories from your writing journey that you wanna share.

Stories about rejections (more than I care to count as I await the right time and the agent/publisher that says’gimme, gimme, gimme), successes, failures, things you’ve learnt,  that kind of thing.

Or maybe you’ve read a book or seen a movie lately that you wanna talk about, whether positively or not so positively, in a review. Btw, if doesn’t have to only be fantasy.

If you wanna join PenScratch and you don’t mind e-mailing me your work and you won’t cry/hate me/ if I make suggestions, then you might just be the person/people I’m looking for as I try and take this blog and make it into a bigger thing that’s recognised as a big thing in the world of blogging.

Of course you’ll be given credit and I’ll do another post detailing the kinds of things I’m looking for in a review if I get some interest.

Let me know if you are interested or if you’ve got any questions.

I also do author interviews here with published authors or authors trying to make it so maybe that’s something you wanna do.

Have a look at the older posts to get an idea of what I’m talking about.

And if you’re interested, leave me a comment with a bit of info about what you wanna do here. Maybe you wanna do movie AND book reviews. That’s cool.

So if any of that interests you and your 15+ in age, let me know.

Plus it could be something cool to include on your CV.

Really I’m interested in creating a PenScratch team. Could be fun and worthwhile.

And with that being said…

Until next time,

Zuhaib.

Zombies Versus Teens – A Wattpad Story

Hey guys,

Second post today.

So a while back I wrote this story on Wattpad that was inspired by the first scene in the story which came to me and the story followed.

I’ve decided to share the book on here with you guys. I’m not quite sure if it’s finshed finshed (not a typo, meant to write that twice) but if it was a movie it would have a cliff hanger ending that could lead to a second film.

So that’s a spoiler right there and the title gives it away that the book is about zombies and teens.

I enjoyed writing it, especially since I’m a zombie fan.

Check it out @ https://www.wattpad.com/story/44288989 and let me know what you thought!

Until next time,

Zuhaib

Update #9 – I’m Baaaaack!

It’s been a while.

Wow, has it been a while.

Hey guys. It’s me, Zuhaib. I’m back.

So in this, my return post, I thought I’d update you guys as to what’s been going on in this writer’s life re my writing since that’s primarily the point of this blog.

Okay so I’m still working on the Terralee Hart series. Still unpublished. Still hoping to get published. Still querying.

Still…

So not much has changed really.

Except the fact that book 1 of the Terra series, ‘Elementia’ has come on leaps and bounds in the past few months. And I’m not just saying that to make myself feel better because my rejection pile recently grew two rejections larger.

It’s true. Seriously. Book 1 is longer. Plot points have been worked out and worked on. New characters have been introduced.

I’m happy with it. Some days overly happy.

So recently I’ve begun a fresh round of edits on book 1 using a printed copy of my book which I ordered off CreateSpace. That’s something else I looked into. Self-publishing.

Yeah I looked into it but ultimately decided not to go down that route. Still thinking about pursuing traditional publishing.

Anyway, so I got an author’s copy of my book from CreateSpace. It’s pretty cool looking. Has typos but it’s just a rough copy that I’m using to edit. I prefer using a book to edit rather than editing on a screen so it’s coming in handy, having the book and it’s helped me rework some stuff too.

Uh huh. Well to sum up, nearly eight years since the concept of Terra was first conceived, book one, though not yet published, is coming along nicely.

And I’ve also been working on book 2. And ideas have been formulating and coming together for the rest of the series too.

I’m excited for the future of Terralee Hart. I really think this could be something in the world of literature.

Now before I head off, just a word about the future of this blog. I’m thinking about using it more for reviews and updates and things like I did before so watch out for more posts you guys.

Until next time,

Zuhaib.

Cover Reveal Exclusive: Elise’s Thoughts on the Covers’ Symbolism So Far

‘Six months ago, almost to the day, Air Awakens came out. It was my debut novel as an independent author, no publisher and no agent behind me, and I had no idea what would come of it. Now, six months later, I can’t believe I’m revealing the cover on the fourth book of the Air Awakens series.

I say every cover is my favorite, because it gets harder and harder to pick. Each of the covers, in their own way, has been perfect for the book they belong with. My cover artist, Merilliza Chan, is amazing at taking direction and incorporating my suggestions.

Part of why each cover is perfect is because there are little hints, teasers, and call-outs to the story within. Without giving too many spoilers, here’s a couple notes on each of the Air Awakens covers so far!

Air Awakens cover (image 1 above):

Elise: First off, notice how Vhalla’s sash is black. In the book, the sash that goes with her apprentice robes is cerulean. This, combined with her robes slowly turning black around the back of the cover is indicative of sorcery making a mark on her. But she hasn’t yet committed, she has yet to don all-black robes. The wind in her hair and sense of movement is a call-out to her affinity. The book in her hands, is representative of three things: her work in the library, the book she exchanges notes in, and the book she brings to the garden. Which, speaking of, the roses around her… well, if you’ve read the book you know what, or who, those are meant to symbolize. But I told Meril I wanted something ominous, something wicked about them. And the thorns going through them were perfect!

Fire Falling cover (image 2 above):

Elise: Here is the first cover we see our dark prince on. Fire Falling is named after three incidents in the book… When Aldrik falls to his knees before Vhalla in the Crossroads, the Rites of the FALLen in the Crossroads for another, and the end of the book. Since two of the three aspects of the title of the book related to Aldrik it was only natural that he had to be on the cover. In Fire Falling, Aldrik is beginning to function as a guiding force for Vhalla and, on the cover, he’s looking over his shoulder at her. He can’t openly admit to their association. Vhalla’s eyes are glowing orange and she’s alight, immersed in flame. This was done to symbolize their Bond and Joining. That not only can his flames not harm her, but that he is connected on a mental and magical level. She is also wearing the armor Aldrik crafted for her.

Earth’s End cover (Image 3 above):

Elise: Now, the symbolism is beginning to get heavy. Vhalla is alone again on the cover, venturing into the wilderness. She’s almost facing the camera, symbolizing how she is growing into her own and becoming a more realized person. In the sky above her is a fire bird. We literally see this formed in the book, but it also is symbolic of a phoenix, rising from its own ashes. I think this works for Vhalla and Aldrik in their own ways through Earth’s End. The cloak she’s wearing is the one she receives from Tim with slash marks. The watch in her hand was gifted to her. And, in her other hand, we see a special sort of magic… Finally, one other note… Carved into a tree that’s on the back of printed books is a symbol – that is actually the symbol of Shaldan!

Author Interview: Joel Lawrence

Hey pals,

The Author Interview series returns here with an interview with Joel Lawrence. Personally, I discovered Joel through OfTomes, his publisher, and when the opportunity to interview him came up, I sent some questions his way. One thing’s for sure though, after this interview and following him on Twitter, I’m starting to get some ‘one to watch out for’ vibes from this guy.

Interview below.
